Fishing Village (August 5, 2023)

Shaji drove us to see the boats come into the harbor and unload their catch.  You would NOT believe the smell.  I had a very hard time but Marshall was in his element!

The boats go out at night and basically fish all night. If you are out at night, you can see hundreds of boats with their lights and they are all fishing. It is magical to see.  Then in the morning, the boats pull up to this beach area and the fun begins.  It is basically an open fish market with a thousand people buying fish. Men and women come to the boat with large bowls to put the fish in.  Some of them carry the bowls on their head.

Then individuals set up all along the road and sell their fish.  We saw shrimp, squid, red snapper, mahi mahi, and some things we have never seen. They were happy to tell Marshall what they were.

This is the cleaning station.  You can pay a small fee to have your fish cleaned here.   These women have a small tree trunk as their table and a big bowl or bucket beside them for the scraps.

Again, imagine the smell.....

It is very chaotic and loud.  People are yelling: bargaining and negotiating. What is interesting is that when we leave in the mornings for Marshall to go to work and me to the gym, there is a lady in the village next to ours that sits under the overpass for the motorway and she sells fish on a little table.  She is sitting low to the ground and all she purchased is spread out on the table for her to resell.

Here the fishermen are folding their nets.  They leave their nets just lined up along this area.  I think people are very trusting and don't bother other people's belongings.

This is an example of one of the bundled nets.

This lady was trying to sell Marshall her fish.  She was not happy that he was taking a picture of her and her fish and not buying any fish from her.

Marshall was so happy to go into one of the fishing supply stores.  They fish with nets and fishing line.  They don't have "sticks" or fishing poles like we do in the US.

Marshall asked the young salesman a few questions and he said he didn't know.  Marshall was surprised that he didn't know much about fishing.  Maybe he didn't understand what Marshall was asking...who knows???

Marshall enjoyed looking at all of the fishing lures.  He said they didn't really look familiar to him.

The blue lines are all different sizes.  You can buy your fishing line from the spindles above.

Here are some fish hooks.

Here is a creative way to decorate a cooler or "icebox."  The Styrofoam coolers are covered in different colored duct tapes. It probably protects them and helps them last a little longer.  I'm not sure they have ever seen a Yeti cooler.

I'm thinking that the sorority girls that have to decorate a cooler for the fraternity mountain weekends could do something fun and much cheaper with some duct tape!

Here is a Clemson "ice box" and a Gamecock one right next to it!
