Sightseeing in Kovalam with John (August 10, 2023)

John arrived on Thursday around 2:45 am.  Shaji and I picked him up from the airport and brought him to our home.  He was excited to finally be here after a long journey.  He had a little trouble sleeping, which was to be expected.  Shaji picked us up at 12:30 pm on Thursday for some sightseeing.

We were all thankful for a later start because we were up in the middle of the night.

John had a hard time in the middle of the night but was sleeping hard on Thursday morning.  I woke him up around 11:30 and scared him.  I cooked us some scrambled eggs and toast and then we were ready for a day of adventure.

Shaji drive us to the fishing village view from the Mosque road nearby.  I wanted John to see all of the fishing boats but didn't really want to walk through the fish all over again....Did I mention how terrible the smell was?

John and I went a small aquarium near Kovalam and enjoyed looking at some of the local fish.  We saw a big shark, a big turtle in the outdoor tanks. These were surprising for such a small aquarium. We saw a laced moray eel and a turkey moray eel which we had never seen before.  We enjoyed the upside down jellyfish.

Shaji drove us to Kovalam's lighthouse beach.  I was hoping that we could climb up the lighthouse but it was closed.  So, we walked along Lighthouse beach for John to see the shops and the area.  We were almost the only people on the boardwalk other than the shop owners.  They were very aggressive with trying to get us to buy their items.  It was making us very uncomfortable.  I don't really want to go back there during the day when other tourists and other people aren't there.

John was excited to try Indian food so we took him to the Taste of Kerala.  We ordered the traditional Keralan meal.  It was a variety of seafood served on a banana leaf.  We had fried prawns, fried squid, fish, many different types of curries: a yellow curry and a red curry.  I really liked the tapioca.  It was not what I thought tapioca was.  We had some fryums and we ate all of this with rice and parotta bread.  I couldn't eat much of it because of the spices but John made a pretty good dent into all the food.

We decided to go back home and enjoy some time in the pool and have a quiet evening back at the house.
