Shaji took us to the tourist area of Varkala. The car park was full and he let us out while he found a parking space. We saw lots of families and even a few Caucasians here, probably Europeans or Russians.
There are many shops and the owners are encouraging you to step into their shops. "There's no cost for looking" they say. We keep moving and don't look too interested or otherwise we would be hounded. The walkway was narrow at times and only room for single file. The shops went on and on and Marshall made me finally stop. I could have kept going.
We are walking along the top of a cliff. The views are amazing. The water is rough below. Many areas are rocky, although we did see a few beachy areas where people were standing. There are not very many people swimming. It seems like the water is too rough for most people.
We watched a group of 3 surfers and they were probably getting a great ride!
You can see some people standing down on this beachy area.
We went upstairs to the Darjeeling Cafe to have a drink and watch the sunset. They had a drink menu with some of your typical tropical drinks. Marshall asked what beers they had and he said only Kingfisher. Marshall ordered a Kingfisher and it came in 2 coffee mugs. Evidently, they might not have the license to sell it so they disguise it.
If you look past me, you can see people walking along the cobblestone path next to the shops down below. Marshall enjoyed watching the people while I mostly watched the waves.Marshall was so happy and loved his Kingfisher in the coffee mugs. The mugs reminded me of the Brady Bunch episode when they are in Hawaii with the cursed statue.
Marshall wants to come back here and maybe even book a hotel so he can wake up to this view, have breakfast here and spend the day and evening in this setting. He loved it here! We may be back....
Many of the shops are selling macramé type decorations similar to this.
This is the view of the Darjeeling Cafe from below. We sat at the table on the far right corner with a perfect view of the sunset.
After sunset, we walked to God's Own Country restaurant and ate upstairs. Again, we could watch people walking by. We had 2 stray cats join us and wait for us to give them any scraps.
Marshall really likes Biryani and tends to order that many places. Most Indians eat this with their hands but the restaurants offer us silverware. I have continued to use silverware although Marshall has eaten with just his hands while with coworkers. His philosophy is to do what they are doing and learn their culture.
I was able to order penne pasta and was quite happy. This area has food that Westerners might prefer so I didn't have any trouble finding something I would like.
We were hearing music while we were eating. We did not realize there was a band playing below us. There were many people in the restaurant downstairs and even others stopping outside the restaurant to watch and enjoy the band.
We had a wonderful afternoon/evening in the Varkala area.
